my old house was on the lake before they tore the wetlands out. they put in a boat launch and a hotel. that’s where they threw our homecoming ball. you wore a black vintage dress, the other girls’ dresses were from the mall, but you’re not dangerous at all. we were just a bunch of bored kids, having sex on our bedroom floors, without banging the headboard, without locking the bedroom door, without making any sound at all. you’ve got your punk rock records and you cut your own hair, but you’re not dangerous at all. my friend’s dad says he’d beat me black and blue, if I was his son that’s what he’d have to do. its all because that’s what God tells him and God is love, God is patience, God has got it all. let’s blow this town, let’s watch it burn. let’s get rich before we’re twenty-one. we’ll sleep with runway models and minor celebrity’s daughters, we’ll set our limousines on fire. we’ll screw rich kids in art school and do coke in the bathroom stalls, but we’re not dangerous at all. we take our coffee straight and black from the convenience store pot, but we’re not dangerous at all. we danced alone in the dark, we wrote our diaries in code, but we’re not dangerous at all.

I just want to go for a ride because the air smells sweet tonight. I want to light your cigarette, and watch the headlights spread out on the road. I want to feel your fingertips on the back of my neck. I want to take you out to dance, where the boys hold their beer cans in sweaty hands. they check you out by the light of the jukebox and the exit signs. Would you take them by the hand and hold them close and tight, let them feel you breath – let them know you’re alive, let them feel your heartbeat. and the boys won’t sleep, no not one wink. the boys won’t sleep tonight. And the air smells sweet and I want to feel you breath it out and in. I want to know you’re alive, want to feel your heartbeat.

It’s the summertime and all the kids are feeling good. mercy me, won’t you let me in your house. you’re so cruel and calm with your swimsuit on, won’t you let me in your house, in the summertime. I miss you bedroom and I miss the sunlit bed, like a soothing stream flowing beneath the green leaves and cool shade. you can be the restless tiger and I will be the trembling fawn. will you think of me, beneath your claws and your teeth, and how I struggled and screamed, when the summer nights grow long – how we laughed and laughed – and while we laughed, the summer passed us by.
